Snow Days

brown, hairy thing that wakes me up every morning…answers to Bailey

There’s something irresistible about the thought of a snow day.  The school was abuzz with the concept that we might not have school on Friday.  Everywhere one walked though out the school the conversations were ripe with the talk of snow, inches, cold, and long weekends.

There were even some who went as far to fill the students’ heads with the idea that if they performed a snow dance they would like ensure a day of freedom.  You know, put your pajamas on backward, spin around three times….

Okay, okay, so maybe I was one of those who were telling the students that such actions would get them the day off, but who can resist the thought of lying in a warm, comfy bed rolling over to look at the clock and with a contented sigh realizing you don’t have to get up.

True, I never am still in bed as by the time I get the blessed phone call informing school is closed I’ve already fed the dog, worked out, watched some news, showered and am well on my way to being ready for school since I’m up and running by 4:30 a.m.  Even on the rare occasion when I receive that blessed call the previous evening I have absolutely zero chance of sleeping in as I have a brown, hairy thing that licks me awake every morning just like an alarm clock.  Except this alarm clock goes off sometime between 3:00 a.m. and 4:30 a.m.  Well, ‘tis true he doesn’t ALWAYS lick me awake.  Sometimes he sits on my head and quietly whines.

But even with the early wakeup call there’s something glorious about having a free day.  Okay, so yes, I have plenty to do, but I can’t do it.  I mean under normal circumstances I’d be in school and I’d be busy, so I wouldn’t have time to do the work, right.

Boy I’m sure going to bummed if we don’t have a snow day tomorrow.

I need children’s song ideas

royce-and-bill.jpgSo I mentioned that I’m fairly boring except for my love of teaching.  I teach high school social studies and the courses I teach vary from year to year.  I love teaching government and law…but I also have a passion for freshmen.  Do not laugh or gasp.  I really do enjoy them immensely.  Since I derive great joy from freshies I teach four classes of freshmen world history this year. (I also teach one class of U.S. History to sophomores, but I dislike sophomores as a whole…that’s another story for later.) Because I’m adventurous I agreed to team teach an at risk group of students.  If you are not familiar with team teaching it generally means that a general ed. teacher teams up with a special ed. teacher.  We have students who are at risk or are classified for special education.  I love that class. They’re a great deal of fun. Plus it’s good for me to slow down and think in a more linear fashion.  I tend to be very global and abstract when I teach.

One of the reasons I dearly love this class is that over the past year I’ve had occasion to have some additional training about Autism and related disorders.

http://www.autism-society.org/site/PageServer?pagename=about_whatis_characteristics is a link to the Autism Society which explains in depth these spectrum disorders.

One of my students this year is a young man who is Autistic.  He is extremely bright, although a person who cast a casual glance may not recognize this because he has a hard time with communication.  One of the things that I’ve found out about this young man, which is true of many with Autism and Aspergers, is that he loves music and as nearly as I can tell he has perfect pitch.  So I came up with this brilliant idea last night.  Why not teach him everything in song?  It will only help the other students.  I’m sort of infamous at school for using hand motions and silly rhymes to help my students remember concepts….so why not songs?

Thus…..I need suggestions for simple, familiar children’s songs that I can take and make into history stories.  If you have any songs that have “stuck with you” since childhood, let me know.  Remember, we here in the house are old.  Well Richard’s old.  I’m not there yet.

Richard’s 40th B-day

0332.jpgOkay, so I enjoy reading blogs, but I feel there’s not much interesting that I have to write about in my life…except maybe students and school.  I’ve determined those subjects really have very little interest except for a limited audience.  However, my mom (who thinks I’m brilliant as all mothers think their children are) encouraged me to write a blog.  Of course I’m not even certain she knows what a blog is, but  since I’m attempting to grow in her a spirit of admiration for technology I’ll attempt it.  Then perhaps, she’ll actually try to surf the web.

This week Richard will celebrate a milestone in his life.  He’s turning 40.  Last night we had a little “party” to celebrate.  Basically invited a few people over and ate.  The ladies stayed upstairs and chatted.   The very elderly men spent the evening in the basement playing with Travis’ Wii….a must for all 40 year olds’ birthday parties.
